The Successful Parent

When it comes to good parenting, it is important to acquire positive techniques and skills to conquer the challenges of being a parent. Effective being a parent will require every resource you can lay your hands on. Never be prepared to sit back on your laurels and let your child’s youth flow by. Continually educate yourself on how to help your child grow so that they will be the best person they possibly can be.

Clear off a space on the kitchen counter, lay your child back on a rolled towel, and run water from the faucet over the hair and scalp. This can help many toddlers who fear having water poured on their head or don’t like their head being dunked in the water.

Parents who have a teenager that is beginning the college selection process need to make sure that they do not try to influence their child to go to the same university that they did. Teenagers will often rebel against their parents’ wishes if they feel they are being overly controlling.

If you want to keep toddlers and younger kids from getting bored and cranky on long car trips, make frequent rest stops. Take your time and let your kids have fun. Even though you won’t arrive at your final destination as soon as you might like, everyone will be happier when they get there! Stopping to eat, or at a park to let the kids play will make the journey a little better.

If you are planning a trip with small children, be sure to bring their favorite comfort items along if space allows. Vacations are supposed to be fun, but a young child may view them as a disruption of his world. If you keep some favorite and familiar toys from home, you can help a child adjust to a new place.

Children want to be useful, to belong, and to have a sense of autonomy. When you provide them with household chores to do while you do your chores, you help them attain these goals. For example, if you are preparing to vacuum the floor, have your child help you pick up any toys that are laying around. When you fold laundry, have your child sort through the socks. These type of tasks will help them develop their independence while helping you around the house.

If you choose to adopt, be honest with your child about his biological family. Adopted children are going to have questions and will look to you for the answers. Lying to your children about their origin will lead to a lot of resentment once they find out.

Use the family line when going through airport security with children. You will find these lines available in most airports. This way, you will not upset impatient travelers since going through the security line with kids takes a bit longer then normal. Airport security requires you to put all kids items, such as car seats and shoes, through the scanning machine.
