Discover What It Takes To Be A Good Parent

By Alberto Abudara  Posted on December 1, 2019 In Parenting Tips Tagged effective parent, team sports

Being a parent is one of the most rewarding aspects of life, and learning the basic skills to do it well will make it even more so. Read this article to pick up good advice you can use to be a better, more effective parent. It just might make the raising a child process even more enjoyable, too.

Your children are always watching your behavior as a map for how they should behave. It is important to build and maintain trust with your children.

While it is true that your children need and deserve your time, the truth is that you do as well. This will help you unwind so that you can become a more effective parent, and find out who you really are.

Don’t let your child leave for school without reflective tape on his backpack. Put this tape on his clothes, too, for extra protection. Velcro even makes detachable reflective strips specifically for this purpose. This will allow your child to be seen more easily by drivers and crossing guards, keeping them safer.

A mesh teether can work wonders; if your children are having trouble cutting their teeth you can put cucumbers, carrots or pickles in one of these to help. The taste will tempt your child to chew for longer and this method can be used safely along with other strategies. The more your child chews on the item, the quicker they will cut their teeth and ultimately feel better.

To prevent your children from becoming cranky or bored when taking a long road trip, make frequent stops along the way. It may be tempting to try to reach your destination as fast as you can, but taking an approach that is more leisurely will help limit the fussiness in the backseat. Stop at parks, restaurants with play areas, or open grassy areas to let your children run off excess energy during the trip.

Make sure that you know it might take awhile for your stepchild to get used to you. A lot of kids are still angry about their parents’ divorce. Go slowly and don’t force anything. With time you can forge a relationship together.

If your child is adopted, understand that you will have to answer some tough questions when your kid becomes an appropriate age. Adopted children are always going to want to know where they were originally from, and naturally they will look to you for the answers. Lying to your children about their origin will lead to a lot of resentment once they find out.

Team Sports

Your children will build self-esteem if they play team sports, so encourage them to try. Giving your child the opportunity and encouragement to participate in team sports, and being there to watch their games, will strengthen your relationship, create shared memories, and build important life skills.

Do not bring junk food into the house if you want to maintain healthy eating habits. Your child has a lower likelihood of asking for junk food if you don’t keep it in your home. You don’t have to ban them for good, but try to save them for special occasions or holidays.

Do not forget to praise your children when they behave well. Children naturally crave attention. If you don’t give it to them for doing the right thing, they will try to get it by doing the wrong thing. It is easy to only notice the bad things a child does when you are a parent. It is a mistake to only pay attention to those things, though. Reward your child when they do well.

Create a written list of rules that your children must follow. Always inform the children of the consequences if they choose to break those rules. These rules and restrictions help your children understand that you love them and want only the best for them. Having an established set of rules will also simplify and help to de-stress your child-rearing time.

Try to keep the same routines every night when you are preparing your young child for bed. Following a routine mentally prepares your child to sleep. He or she will associate the nightly routine of bathing, pajamas and story-time with an impending bedtime. If your child understands and expects what is coming next, he won’t give you any resistance.

Don’t burden your children unnecessarily, but they do need to understand that there are challenges in life. Watching how you and your mate discuss and deal with those concerns can help your child learn problem-solving skills. Being aware that problems can arise also eases your child into understanding the realities of life.

To offer truly effective guidance for your children on the subject of bullying, you must be willing to discuss the matter with them thoroughly. If you have been bullied, share your experiences with your child. Try to learn about the procedures and rules in place at your children’s school and be certain your kids know where to go for help if an incident occurs.

One of the best ways to do this, is to start contributing to a 529 Plan. These are plans operated by the state, and their specific purpose is for college savings. As an added bonus, they provide tax benefits.

As you can see from the great tips in this article, knowing how to parent can make all the difference between child-rearing as a chore and child-rearing with joy. Learn from the mistakes and successes of others. Implement these tactics into your child-rearing approach.
